My friend Irene

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

I have lost a friend to bone cancer — she was 45, and just diagnosed this spring. Irene was a “go-to” friend in Egypt. She and I shared a Brownie troop for two years. Her international portfolio — not as a traveler, but as a resident — included Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Namibia and Trinidad. She […]

Anna’s letter of last month to Barack, Michelle and Jennifer (Granholm)

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

My name is Anastasia Ruth … and I am 10 years old. I live in Chapel Hill, NC. Some things about me you should know are: I love having conversations with adults and I am fascinated by American politics. Until recently, I lived in Egypt for four years, where I attended the Cairo American College. […]

Hot. Verrrrrrrry hot.

And make it fast

I think, unequivocally, that President Obama ought to fire General McChrystal. If nothing else, we are trying to model good practices of government conduct, professionalism, and accountability in Afghanistan. There’s nothing wrong with an independent spirit, but McChrystal blew it.

Camp

I get snippets of information, which I suppose will have to do. Evie’s “majors” are skateboard, film-making, theater and circus. Anna’s are film-making, acting for the camera, theater and circus. I have a few more hours to go before catching the red-eye this evening … but since most of the gals have already headed out, I have time to reflect.
I am not sure that, as weekend gatherings of old friends go, we could have had a better time. Twenty-five years of friendship has produced […]

Clearing my desk

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Up at 3 a.m. Down to the wire. I am writing something for a new client, so it better be good. And it better get done, because I leave late today for my annual meet-up with my Wellesley gang.
This time, we will be a bunch of middle-aged ladies convening in Cool L.A. Many […]

Old farm buildings

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

At Great Smoky National Park, there is a “Mountain Farm Museum” that Anna and I toured as part of her Junior Ranger activities. The feds have done a nice job of transplanting 19th and early 20th century farm buildings from the region to the site, including a stone and wooden storage house for apples (once […]

Status update

School’s out. Girls at camp. Quiet house. Work to do. For pay, and otherwise.
Outdoor construction projects — tree house, simple deck, and storage shed — finish up today. Looking forward to getting our driveway and yard back, not to mention enjoying our New Stuff.

Grade 4-5 Variety Show

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

I had to quell my ambitions early, because, frankly, the 40 or so kids who showed up at the first rehearsal struck me as a rag-tag bunch. WHAT is one to do with the boys who want to fight with their homemade weapons on stage, the soccer players who seemed destined to injure both themselves […]
