Bugs

Friday, May 28th, 2010

In Ms. Jeffries’ 2nd grade class, Bug Fest is nearly upon us. To her relief, Evie was assigned to report upon the benevolent Ladybug. She has prepared small models of eggs, larvae, a pupa and a mature bug out of “clay” made from flour, salt, and water. These are accompanied by a poster featuring […]

Beauty

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Today, 14 5th grade girls put on a marvelous, 30-minute ensemble performance of Beauty and the Beast. Anna enjoyed her role as Beauty, and, as usual, we enjoyed watching her.
Though school is not out, there is a strong sense at our house that summer has begun!

Because we are planning a visit, this list is of some interest

101 Free Things to do in Cherokee, North Carolina
1. Feel the mist of the 20 million year old Mingo Falls
2. Have a picnic with friends
3. Don’t walk, run in the footsteps of warriors
4. Imagine the sounds of life 200 years ago in a pioneer village
5. Lose yourself in the splash of a working water-powered flour […]

10,000 hours

Monday, May 24th, 2010

As maybe four of my eight readers will recognize, that’s a Malcolm Gladwell reference. It concerns the number of hours it takes (according to his super-expertise) to get not just good at a certain task or pursuit, but extra-good.

Palestinian beer (and stress)

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Today’s New York Times has an article about the brewery in Taybeh, West Bank, an enterprise that a number of my colleagues visited (though I did not) during our work last November. I did have a lunch at the table of the one of the brothers who owns the company. I recall getting into […]

The girl next door

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Evie is reveling in the opportunities presented by a cul de sac populated by at least four households with playmate-age kids. Almost every afternoon after school, plus most weekends, she romps around with the homeschoolers-next-door, and when the smaller children who live on the other side of us arrive later (they attend daycare), they, […]

Avoiding the inedible

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

I have very few plans in place for the visit from my-brother-who-operates-the-flour-mill/seed-cleaner, other than to prepare and serve something involving the large bag of wheat flour he gave us last Christmas. I am thinking gnocchi. Big Schlep (yes, he has headed out to Raleigh for the fourth day in a row) is thinking other […]

Following the T-Shirts

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Since I have a slightly-more-than-casual interest in the topic — even going so far as to purchase (though not yet read) a 2005 book — I particularly enjoyed a visit yesterday to one critical stop along the international travels of the garments we wear. Namely, I was pleased to join the Carrboro Elementary School second […]

Report from Mother’s Day

The best ever!
1. Coffee and NY Times in bed
2. A bouquet of flowers
3. A colorful hand-made card from Evie and the poem, “Dear Mama,” by Tupac Shakur, transcribed by Anna*
4. R&B tunes on the iPod dock, while I waited for …
5. Breakfast in bed, which I selected from a hand-printed menu of options
6. … followed […]
